Why be Multi-Cultural?

One Thing church strives to be a multi-cultural community. Multi-cultural means we are multi-ethnic, multi-generational, multi-socioeconomic and multi-lifestyle. Our community currently is made up of various Asian, various Latino, African American and Caucasian; from the college students to those in their 60s; from those who love sports to those who love gaming; from the engineer to the artist; from those who are financially well-off to those who are of low-income; from the nuclear family to the single parent household; and from the physically able to the physically handicapped. But why be multi-cultural?

We believe the multi-culturalism we strive for in our church is gospel driven. As we take a glimpse at the ideal future God foreshadows, we see that he has a vision for multi-culturalism. In Revelation 7:9-14, there is a multitude of people from every nation, tribe, and language, meaning we see people from every sphere of the world – people who are separated naturally by the cultural divide of languages and customs are united under the banner of one Lord in one family of God. God’s vision and goal is to create a kingdom, which is a family of his that would be the most diverse group of people the world would ever see.

In fact, God makes it his mission to ensure that the gospel is delivered to every nation, tribe and language, according to Revelation 14:6, so that his invitation might be extended across the world and to all communities to join his family. He therefore makes it our mission to extend his truth and love to every people, reaching out to people of every multi-faceted cultural group (Acts 1:8). His concern for people has no limits. So the movement and target of the gospel is meant to be worldwide, bound not to one cultural group of people but cross all cultural divides.

But why would he want this? Is it simply that God wants to create a politically-correct kingdom? Is he interested in an eclectic community of believers? Is it because it is a socially nice notion to have diversity? It is for none of these reasons. What drives God for multiculturalism and what drives us to be a multi-cultural church is seen in the depiction of Revelation 7:11, where people of every culture and a plethora of angelic beings are worshipping God. The reason is also found in the exaltation of Revelation 15:2-4, where those worshipping God cry out to him, “For you alone are holy. All nations will come and worship before you, for your righteous acts have been revealed.” Multi-culturalism is essential to the gospel not because of a social ideal but because of God’s worthiness. God is worthy of not only one or a few groups of people to worship him but of all peoples to worship him. What drives One Thing to be multi-cultural is we are constantly and continuously discovering the vastness of God’s beauty and worthiness. At the heart of our multi-cultural mission and community therefore is worship. Our love and worship for God inspires us to be a diverse church community of imperfect people.

The new year always brings the excitement of a new beginning, & 2011 is the start of a new year and a new decade! When the Bible said, “In the beginning…”, it shows us that God is about new beginnings. He loves to create things out of nothing & has been starting new beginnings for people. When He said, “Let there be light,” He caused light to shine into darkness as the first step to creating a beautiful world filled with life. This can be a year where God calls for His light to shine into our lives and, no matter where we’ve been, new starts can mean beauty and life is being created out of us. God is the God of new starts, the God of light, and the result with Him is always beauty.

As we start the second decade in this third millennium, we can look forward to a lot of new incredible things in 2011! Discover this year what it means to be equipped to live fully in God’s glory.

Stay tuned with us as we continue to update our EVENTS CALENDAR for 2011.

Why Would People Follow God’s Will?

While I was standing in line at a theater with my community pastor, I overheard a guy ask his friend with some disgust, “Why would people follow God’s will?” He was a young guy in his early twenties and he expressed that he had dreams and desires of his own to follow. He said that doing God’s will would make him feel like an automaton. Then he said, “I don’t think God made us to be mindless robots.”

Life is about chasing dreams, isn’t it? Without dreams, life is stagnant with no movement towards something worth achieving. In the end, it’s the dreams that we chase that define us. But would it be an odd concept to follow someone else’s dreams? Why would anyone follow God’s will and not his own? I think we pursue after something when we find extraordinary worth in it and when we’re inspired to pursue it. I follow God’s will because He is my king and Lord and infinitely worthy of my faithfulness. Following God’s will is first an interpersonal matter before it is a practical one, because in order to see God’s will is worth following we have to know that God Himself is worth following. Do I know His perfection, beauty, and majesty? While His worthiness is the reason, His love is the inspiration. 1 Corinthians 5:14-15 reads, “For Christ’s love compels us… And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him…” Living for God is a result of being loved by Him. It’s His love poured over me through Christ that captures my heart and invigorates me to live for the object of my affection, so that to live for Him becomes more than a choice but an uncanny drive. The question of why we live is intertwined with how we’ve been loved. In the context of this love God says to those who follow Him, “Well done, good and faithful servant. Come and share your master’s happiness” (Matthew 25:23). The God who invites me to share His will also invites me to share His joy. So, I think the practical question of should we pursue our dreams or God’s dreams is preceded by the interpersonal questions of whether we’ve known Him and known His love.
